Monday Extension Report – September 29, 2008

September 29, 2008

I want to remind you about some of the events that are coming up next week.

Don’t forget that next Monday, October 6 is the Wind Power Information Meeting for Landowners. The meeting will start at 6pm in the Cherry County Courthouse meeting room. It probably won’t get over until almost 10.

The goal of the meeting is to provide information that landowners need to know about land easement contracts and owner rights for wind power contracts.

The topics we’re going to cover at the meeting are:

first an overview of Wind Power in Nebraska,

then we will have a presentation on Community Based Energy Development also known as CBED,

then John Richards will talk about Nebraska Public Power’s approach to land owner contracts,

and finally, we’ve arranged for Wyoming attorney Frank Falen to come talk about all of the different Landowner Rights issues involved in Wind Turbine land contracts. Frank has a lot of experience working with landowners in Wyoming who have wind turbines and wind leases on their ranches.

I’ve gotten quite a few calls from all over about the meeting. I’ve even had calls from North Dakota, and an email from Sweden. A lot of people are interested in our approach.

We are also planning to have a Podcasting Across Nebraska class next Wednesday and Thursday.  There will actually have three parts; On Wednesday, October 8, from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. and 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. and Thursday October 9, from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m.

Currently, podcasting is experiencing tremendous growth and is being used to promote tourism, travel, recreation, historic sites and other activities. Many communities are creating downtown walking tours and driving tours of their historic areas. Instead of just handing out a map or brochure of the area – why not download an audio version and listen to history come to life.

Podcasting is not a replacement for radio. It is a new method of providing information which allows listeners to subscribe to programs, have them delivered automatically to their computers and transferred to the player of their choice.

Why not join us next week and learn how to create your very own podcast. Cost of the Podcast Across Nebraska class is $59.00 and registration is due today. You must register online. Just go to the programs page at cherry.unl.edu.

I also have a couple of things to note in 4-H. The Cherry County 4-H Trap Shoot is this Sunday at the Cody Trap House. Call the office or look in your PIT for the details. Also, the state Range Judging Contest is in Burwell tomorrow.

As always, you can contact the extension office at 402-376-1850 for more information on any of the things I’ve covered.
