Monday Extension Report – August 25, 2008

August 25, 2008

Last week I promised you more details on the Gudmundsen Sandhills Laboratory Open House. The Open House will be this Wednesday, August 27 at the ranch north of Whitman. Registration starts at 8 am Mountain Time, with the program starting at 9. Dr. Matt Burbach, from the UNL School of Natural Resources will start things off with a discussion titled Nebraska and Water.

Then Dr. Walt Schacht will discuss recent research into Grazing Systems in the Sandhills. Following that will be a talk called “Fetal Programming: Considerations for Range Cow Management” given by Rick Funston.

Then, Jim Robb with the Livestock Marketing Information Center will give an update on the Situation, Outlook and Issues in the Cattle Markets.

During the afternoon you will divide up and choose which presentations you want to listen to. There are three time slots and eight choices. Aaron Stalker will present twice, once on Rumen Function, and once on Range Cattle Diets. Terry Klopfenstein, Brent Plugge & Troy Walz will their presentation on Ethanol Co-products on the Ranch twice. Mark Burbach will talk about Meadow Hydrology. Richard Randle – Protecting Your Herd from Trichomoniasis. Dr. Randle is our new Extension Veterinarian. So far I’ve been pretty impressed with him. I think this presentation alone might be worth the trip to Whitman.

Other afternoon choices are Matt Stockton talking about the Economics of Calving Systems, Rick Funston & Will Griffin on Beef Production Systems, and Jerry Volesky, Meadow Vegetation and Management. Weeds are one of the issues that Jerry will be talking about.

They are planning to Adjourn at 3:15 Mountain Time. I hope to see you at Gudmundsen on Wednesday. It promises to be a very informative day.

Finally, one last thing before I let you go. The Evaluation of Beef Carcasses from the Cherry County Fair will be 7 pm tomorrow at the Valentine Locker. I encourage all of the 4-H and FFA Market Beef Project Members to attend if possible. I think the carcass evaluation is as big a part of your project as the show was.

As always, you can contact the extension office at 402-376-1850 for more information on any of the things I’ve covered. You can also visit us online at cherry.unl.edu.
