Monday Extension Report – July 21, 2008

July 21, 2008

4-H members, there are only three weeks until the county fair. I have quite a few reminders for you today.

First off, 4-H Horse project members, your horse show entry forms are due tomorrow.  The deadline to have your levels testing done is August 1.

Livestock entry forms are due next Monday, July 28.

Clothing Day and Presentations Judging is also on the 28th. Judging starts at 1:00 pm in the Cherry County Fairgrounds 4-H Building. The public Style Review and Presentations will start at 5:00 pm.

The 4-H Shooting Sports contest is July 31, a week from Thursday.

Jody wanted me to let you know that there are some important changes that will be coming out in the next PIT newsletter, especially for livestock exhibitors. They are trying to get that PIT out by the end of next week. Make sure you check the updates and changes.

On a completely different note, are you thinking of digging out the pressure canner to preserve your garden produce? Are your recipes adjusted to our altitude? What about those tomatoes, are you following the new guidelines for low acid foods? Pat Jones, the new Family and Consumer Sciences Extension Educator for Brown, Keya Paha, and Rock Counties, will be offering free pressure canner testing here at the Extension Office in Valentine next Wednesday afternoon July 30.  She will also have the latest guidelines available.

Only the gauge type pressure canners can be tested. All Pat really needs is the gauge from the canner, so you can just bring the lid. Although she will look at the whole canner to check for weak areas, cracks or wear in the gasket, etc. if you want to bring in the whole canner. If you can’t come in to the office on the afternoon of July 30, you can bring in your canner and leave it at the office and then pick it up later.

This will be your only chance to get your pressure canner tested in Valentine this summer.

As always, you can contact the Extension Office at 402-376-1850 or stop by 132 South Hall Street for more information on any of the things I’ve covered.
