Monday Extension Report – June 30, 2008

June 30, 2008

First off, I want to remind you that the 4-H Photography workshop is tomorrow. We still have room for a few more kids, so if you are one of those who haven’t registered because you thought it would be full, it’s not. So get your kid signed up. The workshop sessions are July 1, 8, & 10 at the Cherry County Extension Office from nine to noon.

Those of you 4-Hers who still need to take Quality Assurance training this year, don’t forget, Quality Assurance training will be in the Extension Office meeting room at 1:30 pm Central Time next Wednesday, July 9. Seniors and Intermediates can take a test, instead of the training. You can schedule a time to come to our office to take the test, but don’t wait until the last minute.

Believe it or not we are getting close to fair. That means that pre-fair deadlines and events are coming up quickly. Clothing and presentation entry forms are due July 17. That sounds like a long ways away to me, but Jody pointed out that is less than three weeks away.

Speaking of Jody, if you haven’t met Jody Soester yet, you should make a point of saying hi when you drop off your forms. Jody is our new 4-H Assistant and she is just finishing her first month on the job.

On a completely different note, ranchers, have you thought yet about how and when you are going to sell you calves this year? Of course you have, but I read something a little while back that I wanted to remind you about. Dillon Feuz, who used to be Extension Livestock Marketing specialist at Scottsbluff, and now is at Utah State, wrote the article. According to Dillon, calf market fundamentals are strong, but that strength needs to be considered in the context of feed prices and fed cattle prices. He also pointed out that both of the last two years calf prices were much lower in the fall than what was expected in the summer. Ranchers who priced their calves earlier in the year, benefited from those higher summer expectations. It may be that this year will also be a good year to get those calves sold, or hedged, early.

As always, you can contact the extension office at 402-376-1850 for more information on any of the things I’ve covered.
