Monday Extension Report – December 24, 2007

December 24, 2007

Wow, Christmas Eve. I tried to find a clip of Christmas music to celebrate, but one didn’t jump out of my computer and say pick me, so…. same old intro, oh well. The first thing I need to tell you today, is that the Extension Office is closed all this week. Actually we are closed next Monday and Tuesday too. We will reopen on January 2nd. UNL calls it the Holiday Shutdown. The whole university always shuts down between Christmas and New Years.

I gave you all of the details on the Ranching for Profitability meeting last week, so I won’t go through the whole agenda again. But I do want to remind you that it’s coming up January 9, from 3-8 pm in the 4-H Building. You’ll need to call next week to pre-register, so we can get an accurate count for supper. The meal is free, thanks to the generosity of the First National Bank of Valentine, but you do need to pre-register.

I got to hear Dr. Matt Spangler speak at the Range Beef Cow Symposium. Dr. Spangler is the new UNL Extension Beef Specialist for Breeding and Genetics. He did a great job, I think you are going to enjoy him. He is going to be the instructor for the last two installments of this winter Beef Satellite Short Course. On January 14, his topic will be “Revisiting crossbreeding – are we forgetting its worth?” On January 28, it will be “Indexes and new terminology in beef genetics.”

I’ve also settled on the dates and locations for the eAg: Decision Support Tools workshops in the BitMobile mobile classroom. They will all be from 1:30 – 3:30 pm local time. On January 16 we’ll be in Cody. In Wood Lake on January 21 and January 23 I’ll be in Elsmere. I’m going to be charging $15 for the workshop. The good news about that is that I’ll have a CD for each of you that contains most of the software we will be talking about.

Remember the extension office is closed all week, meanwhile, you can always visit us on the web at cherry.unl.edu for more information on any of the things I’ve covered.
