Monday Extension Report – September 24, 2007

September 24, 2007

Don’t forget, Next Wednesday evening, October 3, at 7:30 pm Central Time I will be hosting the International Beef Marketing Opportunities satellite conference downlink at the Extension Office meeting room. The satellite conference will help beef producers learn more about raising livestock that are eligible for export. The conference will also help producers understand the marketing opportunities available and the terminology and programs associated with exports, such as Processed Verified Programs and Quality Systems Assessment programs. The conference also will examine the potential benefits and costs associated with participating in these programs.

The conference is all about helping producers understand their options. If you have questions, join me at the Extension Office at 7:30 pm on October 3 and we will help you sort through the various programs.

While we are talking about workshops, don’t forget the rangeland monitoring workshop on October 17. The workshop, called “Monitor Range to Maximize Grass” is being held at the Gudmundsen Sandhills Lab at Whitman Nebraska. Participants will learn to use the Sandhills Decision Support Tool for grazing management and photo monitoring. It will be a hands on outdoor learning opportunity.

On these monday radio programs, I talk a lot about 4-H and the ag programs, but I haven’t said very much about UNL Extension NebGuides or Extension’s consumer education programs. Extension Publications just released some new personal management NebGuides. There are a couple on time management (G1771, G1772), and a couple on finances (G1764, G1765). The consumer finance education team also has a web site designed to help you get out of debt. Just go to paydowndebt.unl.edu to check it out.

I want to leave you with a couple tips from the NebGuide “Thirteen Timely Tips for More Effective Time Management.”

Tip one is Spend Time Planning and Organizing. Using time to think and plan is time well-spent. Time management pioneer Alan Lakein coined the phrase “failing to plan is in effect, planning to fail.” Organize in a way that makes sense to you. If you need color and pictures, use them on your calendar or planning book or in your electronic organizer. Some people need to have papers filed away; others get their creative energy from their piles. So forget the “should’s” and organize your way.

Tip number two is Set Goals. Goals give your life, and the way you spend your time, direction. When asked the secret to amassing a fortune, one of the wealthy Hunt brothers from Texas replied: “First you’ve got to decide what you want.” Set goals that are specific, measurable, realistic and achievable. Your optimum goals are those that cause you to “stretch” but not “break” as you strive for achievement. Goals can give creative people a much-needed sense of direction.

If you want the other 11 Tips, you’ll have to read the NebGuide. As always, Contact the extension office at 376-1850 or visit us on the web at cherry.unl.edu for more information on any of the things I’ve covered.
