I hope everyone is enjoying the wonderful spring weather. March is calving time in Cherry County and it certainly has been great weather for baby calves.
Warm and dry is certainly great for calving, but those probably aren’t the words we’re most excited to hear after the drought we’ve been experiencing the last several years. I took a peek at last weeks drought monitor this morning, and sure enough we’re dry. We range from abnormally dry in the southeast, to severe drought in the western half of the county. Hopefully this weeks’ drought map will look a little better after the rain on Saturday.
While things may look a little dry, I think it’s too early to start talking drought. We’re only about 35 hundredths below average so far for the water year. It may be too early to start talking drought, but it’s exactly the right time to be planning, not just what to do if it doesn’t rain, again, but also what to do if it does rain. Rain in Cherry County is not important just to the ranchers and the farmers, but to everyone else as well. You probably already realize this, but the amount of rain we get has a direct impact on the economic well being of nearly every business in the area.
Lets change subjects and talk about events we have coming up.
I’ve been talking about it for weeks, and it is finally here. Actually, from my viewpoint, time has been flying by so fast that what I’m actually thinking is; “even though I’ve been talking about it for weeks, it’s already here.” The 2007 Cherry County 4-H Communications and Expressive Arts Contest is this Saturday, March 31 at the Valentine Rural High School.
The Speech and PSA Contest will start that morning at 9:30. The Music Contest will start at 12:30 Saturday afternoon. Awards will be presented after each section of the Contest. 4-H Achievement Awards for 2006 will be presented immediately following the Music Awards.
